children in the mediation process

There is a requirement under law for the wishes and feelings of children to be taken into account, and this is met through our mediation process.

Where both parents are willing children from six years old and upwards can be seen by a mediator [with another mediator in attendance.] This enables children of all ages [and the oldest we have seen was 21!] to be involved in the changes that will inevitably take place.

The mediator can help them understand that these changes are normal, that many other children live in this situation and to understand that the changes will make their lives better in the long run. They also appreciate that their parents are doing their best to make the transition as smooth as possible and that because both parents love them very much they want them to have a voice in the process.

Our experience is that parents and children alike find this helpful and cathartic.
